Furniture upcycling is hardly a new thing. Historically, household objects were rarely thrown away, but rather reused or repurposed. Preparation is key– with every DIY task it makes more sense to plan out what you are going do and make sure you’re prepared. Make sure you prep your chosen piece by wiping it down and doing any sanding or smoothing required. Don’t get too excited and rush the process, it’s really easy to do this but patience is needed to ensure you get the best end result.
Look for hidden gems– if you see a vintage wardrobe or chest of drawers that you love in a boutique or on Instagram then have look on Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace or charity shops. There are so many amazing pieces and hidden gems in these places that are begging to be restored and revamped.

Invest in good tools – Cheap paint brushes leave bristles in your newly painted work and do not give good coverage. All good paint brands now have their own paint brushes which work wonderfully well together. Wrap brushes and rollers in tinfoil or clingfilm in between coats to keep the brush moist and then clean them as soon as you’ve finished painting or waxing. Also don’t skip the wax or varnish when’ve you’ve finished, make sure you protect all your hard work give it longevity.
Don’t be afraid to try different things and get started- Upcycling can seem daunting but plan ahead and think what’s the worst than can happen, you can always start again and it’s a lesson learned for next time.
